Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve vocational students’ understanding and basic skills in designing electronic circuits using KiCad. The program was conducted at SMK Negeri 7 Bandar Lampung and involved 34 students from the information technology field. The main problem addressed in this activity was the limited practical experience of students in designing and visualizing electronic circuits digitally, particularly in creating schematic diagrams and printed circuit board (PCB) layouts. The activity was implemented through preparation, training, mentoring, and evaluation stages. The training materials covered basic electronics, an introduction to KiCad, schematic design, PCB layout design, and the development of a simple traffic light circuit project. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test instruments, observation during practice, and assessment of participants’ design outputs. The results showed an increase in students’ understanding, as indicated by the average pre-test score of 53.24, which increased to 70.00 in the post-test, with an improvement of 16.76 points or 31.48%. The normalized gain score of 0.36 indicated a moderate level of improvement. In addition, participants were able to produce simple electronic circuit designs in the form of schematic diagrams and PCB layouts. These results indicate that KiCad-based practical training can support vocational learning and strengthen students’ basic competencies in electronics, computer networks, and IoT-related fields.
