Workshop Peningkatan Keterampilan IoT untuk Guru dan Siswa SMK Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung melalui Penggunaan Basis Data Firebase dan MySQL
Abstract
This community service program aimed to strengthen the practical skills of teachers and students of SMK Negeri 4 Bandar Lampung in implementing Internet of Things (IoT) systems integrated with online databases. Field observation indicated that teachers and students still had limited technical understanding of connecting microcontroller-based devices with database systems, particularly Firebase and MySQL, which are essential for project-based learning oriented toward Industry 4.0. The activity was carried out as a one-day face-to-face workshop on 13 August 2025, involving teachers and students from the information technology department, and consisted of preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. The training material covered the basic concepts of IoT, programming of the ESP32 microcontroller, sensor data communication, and the integration of sensor data with Firebase and MySQL databases. Participants practiced building a simple monitoring prototype using an ESP32 microcontroller and a DS18B20 temperature sensor and were guided to complete a mini project as a direct application of the material. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test instruments as well as observation during practice. The results showed that more than 80% of participants were able to send sensor data to both Firebase and MySQL and to build a simple monitoring dashboard. The required outputs of the activity — a poster, an activity documentation video, mass-media publication, and a training module — were all completed, and a teaching-aid prototype was handed over to the school as an additional output. These results indicate that practice-based IoT and database training can strengthen vocational students’ digital competence and support project-based learning oriented toward Industry 4.0.
